What is a bait dog?

A "bait dog" is a dog used in a cruel and illegal form of dog fighting training. It's not a breed, but rather a dog used as a living target for other dogs being trained to fight. These dogs are intentionally subjected to horrific abuse and violence.

Here's what characterizes the use of a bait dog:

  • Purpose: Bait dogs are intentionally injured or killed to train fighting dogs to be more aggressive and tenacious. The fighting dog is encouraged to attack the bait dog, inflicting bites, wounds, and often severe injuries. The goal is to increase the fighting dog's aggression, stamina, and tolerance for pain.

  • Treatment: Bait dogs are consistently and deliberately abused. They are often kept in terrible conditions, malnourished, and denied veterinary care. Their injuries are rarely treated, allowing them to suffer prolonged pain and distress.

  • Types of dogs: Any breed of dog can be used as a bait dog, although smaller, weaker breeds are often targeted due to their perceived vulnerability.

  • Legality: Using a dog as bait is illegal in most, if not all, places with laws against animal cruelty and dog fighting. The practice is considered a serious felony with significant penalties.

It's crucial to emphasize that the use of bait dogs is abhorrent animal cruelty. If you suspect that bait dogs are being used, you should report it to your local animal control authorities or law enforcement immediately. Providing information anonymously is often possible and encouraged.
